badass women i admire

After spending days watching the Olympics, it's absolutely amazing to see all of the amazing athletes. What's even more amazing is to see some fantastic women competing against each other...and, for the most part, supporting each other. The US women's gymnastics team, Katie Ledecky, Lilly King, Virginia Thrasher...it's really empowering. I wanted to keep the party going a bit by sharing a quick list of some of the badass women I admire.

janis joplin

Honestly, she's pretty much who inspired me to write this post (even more so than the Olympics). I recently watched a biography called "Janis: Little Girl Blue," which is now available now on Netflix. While I've always loved her voice, her story is simply amazing. Though she fought her own demons, Janis was outrageous, unapologetic, and just so damned talented. Her death was a such a loss to the musical world.

My Favorite Work: "Maybe" and "Me & Bobby McGee (Demo Version)"

You are what you settle for. You are only what you settle for.
— Janis Joplin

maya angelou

Survivor. Poet. Artist. Author. Singer. Activist. There was nothing that woman couldn't do. Maya wrote of the difficult things, of racism and abuse. Her husky voice, twinkling eyes, and sparkling smile could light up a room. Her ability to see things so clearly was almost uncanny. She also never hesitated to offer an honest opinion and sage advice, despite how difficult any situation seemed. Maya's perspective is something I only ever dream of obtaining.

My Favorite Work: "Phenomenal Woman"

It’s the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
— Maya Angelou

gloria steinem

All hail the queen of the modern feminist movement. She became a household name after her exposé on the degradation and sexual harassment she suffered while posing as a Bunny at the Playboy Club in 1963. She encourages women to stand together instead of judging each other and she never fails to question why women are (even now) still expected to choose between careers and relationships. At 82 years old, she's still sticking to her guns and kicking ass.

My Favorite Work: Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions

Far too many people are looking for the right person, instead of trying to be the right person.
— Gloria Steinem

And, of course, the Notorious RBG.
