avoid the blues between travels
If you travel frequently, you probably understand the feeling of post-travel blues. While I'm usually excited to sleep in my own bed and see the fur babies, there's always an odd feeling of sadness that hits me.
Right now, I'm in between trips. I have a few coming up, but I've been home for almost a month. That's really unusual for me. I can't quite qualify it as anxiety, but it's very similar. I start getting antsy. There's just this overall feeling of unease and, honestly...a smidgen depressed.
When I start getting that feeling, I have a couple of things that I do to help get me over the hurdle until my next trip.
(1) travel through books
I spend a lot of time reading anyway. However, when I start feeling like I'm suffocating at home, I dive into a book. I generally try to find one where travel is involved. One of my favorites is, without fail, Eat, Pray, Love. I love the idea of Elizabeth Gilbert's introspective journey and how she finds something amazing about each place she visits.
(2) crank up the tunes
Music always inspires me. Most of the important moments in my life (including my travels) have their very own soundtrack in my head. When I feel "homesick" for New Orleans, I put on serious blues and jazz, like Muddy Waters or Buddy Guy. When I need to feel to travel back to Europe, a little Edith Piaf or Billie Holiday does the trick. And Texas country always puts me in the mood for a Hill Country trip.
(3) start planning another trip
While you don't have to start paying for another trip, necessarily, it's always fun to dream and start planning new adventures. Pinterest and Instagram are the best ways to fuel my wanderlust. I've already added three new places to my bucket list:
- The Blue Grotto in Bisevo, Croatia
- Alaçati and the Çesme Peninsula, Turkey
- Val d'Orcia in Tuscany, Italy
(4) make something new
When the Man Friend and I returned from overseas, one of the first recipes we made was Julia Child's boeuf bourguignon and salade Lyonnaise. It made me want to go back, but I was really excited to know that I could recreate a little bit of our travels at home.
(5) if all else fails, just keep busy
Make a new friend. Volunteer. Plant something pretty. Take on a new home improvement project. Or better yet...start a blog about all of your favorite things :)
