Helllllooooooo, fellow bookworms. Are you reading anything fantastic right now?

I realize it's not fall yet. It's still about 90 degrees outside, but the change is coming. Autumn is around the corner, I can feel it. It's my favorite season...just warm enough for light layers, but cool enough for apple cider and evening fires.

After just getting done with a so-so series (see below), I started the follow up novel to a book I read a few years ago. I love a good fantasy novel, full of witches, fairies, and magic. While I'm not super active, I'm a member of a reading group on Goodreads called Bookworm Bitches (big surprise, right?!). Anyhow, all the way back in 2013, they read a book by Paula Brackston called The Witch's Daughter.

This is seriously the only book club read I've even participated in.

Ms. Brackston came out with an unexpected (for me) sequel, I jumped on it and did something I rarely do...I preordered. So far, the book is a little slow but the imagery and imagination behind the story are quite good. I look forward to finishing it up! Be sure to check out The Return of the Witch...and stay posted on updates. It's just spooky enough to make me ready for fall!

When I travel, I usually prefer to read easy novels. As much as I love furthering my knowledge base, it's difficult to get into super heavy classics or serious nonfictions. while trying to relax on trips. I've been a fan of Karina Halle's work for some time now and have read several of her series. Her work is edgier than typical romances, including some pretty vicious drug lords and plenty of tattoo artists.

This duo, The Devil's Metal and The Devil's Repriseis one of her earlier works. Unfortunately...you can tell that's the case. These two novels are definitely an initial step in her creative process. The scenes were forced and dragged out, the *lightbulb* moments were a little too obvious, and the heroine was tragically helpless.

(quick & dirty summary: hero and heroine make separate deals with the devil and try to avoid paying up when it's time to collect, plus the drugs, sex, and rock 'n roll of the 1970's concert scene),

While I understand the storyline, it just didn't do it for me. There were some spooky moments which made me a little antsy, but the overall feel of the books was just too predictable.

However, don't let that dissuade you from checking out some of her other works, including The Artists Trilogy.
