what i'm reading wednesday | 01.18.17
I'll admit that I haven't read much in the last few days...but I'm still pacing myself for a full year!
pride and prejudice jane austen
This novel is part of the 2017 Wine, Books, & Wanderlust classic books reading challenge. For those of you who haven't gotten started yet...it's not too late!
I've loved the movie for years, but I was genuinely surprised at the sass and sarcasm from a female author in 1813. Simply put, it was refreshing. She accurately captures a bright mind, a passionate spirit, and a lovely heart caught in a time of politeness and classism. Rosamund Pike, who played Jane in the 2005 screen adaptation, narrates this version of the novel perfectly, particularly the voices of Mrs. Bennett and Mr. Collins. Don't miss out!
the vampire lestat anne rice
Yes, I know. I'm back on Anne Rice. But she's such a prolific writer...can you blame me? The novel picks up where Interview With The Vampire leaves off. However, Lestat is the principle narrator this time. Put off by the events with Louis in the previous novel, Lestat, irritated and slightly vengeful, sets off to clear his name after Louis's tell-all. While I am enjoying learning about Lestat's history, I'll admit to being put off by the "rock superstar" storyline. *insert eye roll here*
the mermaids singing lisa carey
I actually snagged this novel at my favorite (now closed) used bookstore many moons ago. The story is of a teenage girl, raised alone by her spirited, independent mother. After her mother dies, she meets a family she never even knew existed and is sent to live with them. The story takes place in both America and Ireland, switching out between narrators: Gráinne (the girl), Grace (her mother), and Fiona (the long lost grandmother),. From the get-go, this is the book that made me want to visit Ireland. It's part adventure, part family drama, and part coming of age. It's still one of my favorite novels and I can't wait to re-read it.
