reading list | spring 2017

Wait. Didn't I just write a list for Fall and Winter? Here it is, spring in Pennsylvania. I came in for a quick visit to see the Man Friend...and my new house (happy dance!).

Pittsburgh has been a bit of a surprise for me. I love the little village we live in...it's got lots of local bars and shops within walking distance. Our house is over 100 years old. It has a teeny tiny room that will be perfect for a small office...and a reading room. It's full of sunshine and has just enough room for a comfy chair and a small table to hold a book and a mug. YES! The people are friendly, it's very dog-friendly, and there are things I'm not used to seeing...like trees, water, and hills. It's a completely different country. It almost feels like a different planet!

Anyhow, here are a few books I'm really looking forward to reading in my new reading nook...after we get all of our shit moved up here next month.

girl underwater by claire kells

Are you a fan of survivalist novels? I never really have been, but this novel had decent reviews and the storyline looks interesting. When swimmer Avery is only one of five survivors of an airplane crash, she's forced to figure out how to survive with a little added romance and humor. The reviews were mixed, so we'll see.

i'll give you the sun by jandy nelson

Twins Noah and Jude are inseparable, until adulthood when they become estranged. The story is split into two halves, Noah tells the early years and Jude's version are the later years. However, their story is incomplete without the other. I love a good novel with flawed characters and bit of mystery about the storyline. This one should be interesting.

the night sister by jennifer mcmahon

A group of girls' childhoods are ruined after their discovery at an abandoned motel. Years later, they come together when the secrets of the past come back to haunt people. This book sounds creepy as hell. Living in an old house that makes strange noises of its own, I will probably not be reading this when I'm alone.

the house we grew up in by lisa jewell

A family story about little obsessions that turn massive, this story follows the quirky Bird family. After a horrible tragedy, the estranged family comes back together years later as they work through their mother's hoarding habits. A good "weird family" novel is always a good sunny weather read.

the invisibles by cecilia galante

Four girls growing up in a home for troubled teenagers bond, calling themselves The Invisibles. Though separated by adulthood, a suicide attempt brings the women together again. I'm kind of hoping that it won't be like Britney Spears' "Crossroads," but it seems like it will be a bit darker.

the fireman by joe hill

Do you know Joe Hill? You should. He's Stephen King's son. No shit. This novel is set during an apocalyptic time. Adults are afflicted with a condition that causes them to spontaneously combust. People are terrified of becoming infected, in addition to the brutal vigilante squads strive to eliminate those suspected of carrying the disease. However, a mysterious drifter, dressed in a fireman's jacket, has figured out how to wield the fire. Looks to be another good one from Joe Hill.
