concan, texas | july 2016
Every year since I was about ten years old, my family traveled to a little central Texas community along the Frio River. We started out staying in fairly rustic cabins on the waterfront know "Edgar's River Terrace" just outside of a town called Leakey (pronounced "lakey" not "leaky"). The cabins consisted of two rooms: the main room with a bed, a small table, and a fridge with a toilet/shower, whereas the second room was basically a screened in porch filled with beds. It was cramped, hot, and oh so much fun.
As our family has grown, we've needed a little more room and we've upgraded to a 5 bedroom, 4 1/2 bath stone house nestled next to the mountains near Concan (not Cancun). It's got a great patio, lots of shade, and it's just far enough that the noise of the river crowds don't annoy you...but it's certainly easy enough to walk to the water. It's also a quick stop to several little grocers, souvenir stands (hello, Frio Fergies & Frio's Dry Fifty!) where we spend countless amounts of money on t-shirts each year, and the best damn pies in the world at Concan Pies (the Concan meringue and chocolate butter cake are out of this world delicious).
This year was my nephew's first year to become a river rat. Our friends Dave and Stephanie brought their new twins in from San Antonio. My brother's friend from high school, who used to come along with us when they were growing up, joined us again this year with his (almost) 10 year old daughter.
No matter how things change, the more they stay the same. And I can still barely contain my excitement each time we cross the river bridge, regardless of how old I am. Until near year, Rio Frio!
