vacation reads | costa rica 2017

This time next week, I will be camped out on a beach, drinking Imperial, and reading. A lot. One of  the best things about taking a vacation (for me, anyway) is the chance to catch up on my reading. I stock up on books and just...get lost.

Not only is reading fantastic during the travel time, it's the perfect way to spend a lazy afternoon on vacation. A ton of my friends are very "get up and GO" kinds of people on trips, but the Man Friend and I are perfectly happy to combine adventure with relaxation. Our most recent trips have been shared with friends and family, so we haven't had a lot of down time to spend reading (not that I'm complaining about getting to spend time with our tribe). But since Costa Rica is just the two of us, we're planning on a lot of literary interaction.

caraval by stephanie garber

This new novel popped up in my Instagram feed. It's been touted as a combination of The Hunger Games and The Night Circus, both of which I enjoyed immensely. The story of two sisters, a magical game, and a lot of intrigue and mystery...how could I not pick this up?

you will know me by megan abbott

Everyone has an opinion about stage parents and soccer moms. This novel takes the competition to extremes, when the queen of the gymnastics team is involved in something a little darker and more sinister than ever imagined. Though it got average reviews, I picked it up on the cheap from BookBub...can't beat it for less than $3!

thief of hearts by l.h. cosway

Irish writer L.H. Cosway has been a favorite of mine for several years. She writes happy endings for less than perfect character (though it sometimes takes them a while to get there). I love her misfit heroes, tattooed heroines, and gritty storylines. This is the fifth in her Hearts series, following the lovably criminal Cross family as they trudge up from poverty to make lives (and find love) for themselves.

yes please by amy poehler

For being such a fan of Amy Poehler, I'm surprised I haven't read this book yet. Her hilariously insightful memoirs has received rave reviews for its advice and humor. This one might be one I need to read alone, for fear of laughing out loud in public.

the casquette girls by alys arden

Taking place in post-Katrina New Orleans, this novel follows the heroine, Adele, as she navigates the abandoned French Quarter...and encounters something less than human waiting for them in the shadows. Filled with the supernatural and of getting sucked into your own family history.

forest of hands and teeth by carrie ryan

Who doesn't love a good post-apocalyptic storyline while on vacation (I'm weird, I guess)? On one side, there is safety. On the other, there is the forest of hands and teeth...and zombies (of sorts). Mary, the protagonist, is stuck in the middle...feeling an obligation to stay near to what she's come to know and the side longing for something new. Should be interesting, indeed.
